About Dr. Susanne Schäffler-Gerken

y passion for East Asian art arose while studying sinology and Japanese studies at the University of Hamburg and in Taiwan. I have visited exhibitions in renowned museums, internationally as well as nationally, and have attended the art seminars of the East Asia specialist Dr. Rose Hempel at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg. This is when I also began to collect academic literature on Chinese ceramic and porcelain art. In 1985, I was hired by the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe as a research associate. This position allowed me to thoroughly examine and familiarize myself with such objects. To further expand my knowledge in art history and archaeology, I later took up doctoral studies at the University of Hamburg and received my doctorate in 1999, with a dissertation on Chinese incence burners of the boshanlu type from the Han Dynasty.
As a promoted sinologist I have now for many years been working as an independent expert on East Asian fine artworks and Chinese contemporary art, holding lectures on these topics, writing academic articles and publications, and working as a museum docent. Additionally, since 2011 I offer expert services as an appraiser and examine pieces from China, Japan and Korea. From my base in Hamburg I maintain good contacts with museums, collectors, experts, traders and auction houses.
